Euphorbia officinarum L. subsp. echinus (Hooker fil. & Cosson) Vindt
Synonym: Euphorbia echinus Hooker fil. & Cosson
Endemic of Morocco and Mauritania.
Euphorbia officinarum is used in traditional medicine to treat skin and ophthalmologic diseases. It should be noted that due to its high toxicity, the plant extract must always be used in low concentrations.

An abnormal development resulting in a flat stem (fasciation) is one of the most widespread developmental abnormalities in higher plants The cause of fasciation in Euphorbia officinarum subsp. echinus is not known.

La steppe à euphorbe oursin couvre au Maroc une bande côtière qui englobe le Sud du Souss et une partie su Sahara atlantique, région sous l'influence de l'alizé maritime. On peut y reconnaître plusieurs groupements végétaux dominés, dans le Nord, par l'Arganier, dans le Sud par les Chenopodiacées sahariennes et en situation plus continentale par Artemisia gr. herba-alba

Euphorbia officinarum L. subsp. officinarum
La steppe à euphorbe de Beaumier occupe les marges occidentales et méridionales du massif des Ida-ou-Tanane, depuis Agadir jusqu'au cap Rhir où elle forme un étroit cordon littoral. Elle est généralisée sur les versants tournés vers l'W et vers le S à condition que l'altitude ne dépasse pas 300m. Du point de vue floristique, elle renferme de nombreuses espèces de souche macaronésienne.

Facilitation écologique
Sur le terrain, il n’est pas rare d’observer que l’euphorbe oursin facilite la germination et le développement ultérieur de l’arganier
